The Arcane Sanctuary

Where: Lut Gholein, Aranoch
When: Approximately 225 CE

Those travelers who brave the deserts of Aranoch will likely have heard the tale of the legendary Arcane Sanctuary. The story has been in Aranochian lore since around the year 225, when it was first spread orally. It is then surmised that around 350 CE is the first time when the legend was put to paper as "The Tale of the Sanctum".

The legend of the Arcane Sanctuary and its construction is attributed to the ancient Angirisian scholar named Horazon. Horazon was very much one of the foremost minds of his day, and had an extensive collection of tablets, scrolls and maps. He was among the first to introduce the first reforms that helped start the process of the Angirisian League evolving into the Angirisian Empire. He lived in Caldeum, Kehjistan as one of the most foremost citizens of the city. After Kehjistan's absorption into the Angirisian Empire, Horazon was tapped to be one of the provincial governors of western Kehjistan. After serving three years, he joined up with the expedition that was sent to conquer Aranoch as an adviser. With the subjugation of Aranoch, Horazon settled in Lut Gholein and became the city's chief librarian. Entering retirement, Horazon decided to devote the remainder of his days to seeking knowledge and conduct experiments. In order to do this in relative solitude, Horazon decided to construct the Arcane Sanctuary.

The Arcane Sanctuary itself was believed to have been constructed in a labyrinthine manner, and was thought to be a major center of learning during the early days of Angiris's control of Aranoch. Horazon filled his Sanctuary with all manner of arcana and scrolls of great knowledge. Among the various artifacts included a number of statues, trinkets and other luminaries representative of the various cultures in Angiris and the Galasian Realm. The Sanctuary supposedly stood for more than two hundred and fifty years, and during that time Lut Gholein began to further grow around the Sanctuary. Hundreds of people every day came in and out of the Sanctuary, thirsting for knowledge and reminiscing about the great artifacts within. Then one day, as if out of nowhere, the Sanctuary supposedly collapsed into the sands, killing everyone in the Sanctuary and burying it under hundreds of feet of sand and dirt. It was unknown whether or not Horazon was in the Sanctuary when it collapsed, but it is known that he was never heard or seen from again. Much of Lut Gholein's populace was lost in the disaster, and the city was damaged for decades afterward, even after all the aid coming in from other provinces had already been invested.

The Arcane Sanctuary faded into legend for years after the supposed disaster. Ever since the story came back into the vernacular in Aranoch more than a century later, however, thousands of travelers to the city of Lut Gholein scoured the supposed former site of the Sanctuary in hopes of unearthing its secrets. Some even searched for Horazon, thinking he had escaped the Sanctuary before its destruction, but to no avail. Many sought entry into the Lut Gholein Palace, thinking it held the secrets of the entrance to the Arcane Sanctuary. After a while, the city's officials began denying anyone entrance into the Palace in part because a number of precious items had been coming up missing in the Palace with all of the travelers about.

In recent years, the city of Lut Gholein has largely forgotten about the legend of the Arcane Sanctuary but every now and again someone tries to head down into the Palace's cellar passageways with a pig-sticker...

Tristram's Cathedral

Where: Tristram, Khanduras
When: 554 CE

The many stories and legends surrounding the infamous Cathedral in Tristram are known to many foreign observers who come to the city to investigate the mysterious former holy site.

It is unknown when the Cathedral was actually built, but it was re-appropriated as a Messanic church in 554. It was around this time that the town of Tristram itself began to grow down the road from the Cathedral along the Talsandes River. Some nearly two hundred years passed, and Tristram grew to be a prosperous trading town between the bustling metropolises of the eastern part of the Angirisian Empire and the more rugged lands of Arreat and Scosglen. That ended with the eruption of the First Angirisian Civil War in 738 CE, where marauding bandits ran roughshod throughout the central Khanduran countrysides; Tristram itself was besieged numerous times. The Imperial Legion moved in in 767 CE, taking the old Cathedral as their new headquarters. They would remain in the city for the next 36 years, defending Tristram from the bandits as well as rebel forces that would sweep through southern and central Khanduras. The First Civil War ended in 803, but the scars of war still bore through Tristram. The Cathedral was looted bare by Legion forces, and it fell into disrepair once again. The eruption of the Second Civil War 11 years later made things worse, and this time Tristram was sacked in 808 by rebels in response for the Legion destroying the border town of Waystruck the year prior. The rebels forced many of the townspeople to flee to the Cathedral, briefly making that a sanctuary once again. When the Second Civil War ended in 844 CE, Tristram was left ruined, and many of its citizens fled east to Aiur or south to Westmarch in search of new lives. The Cathedral became the center of Tristram once again, and it was remodeled over the next two decades to befit its legendary stature. Using the rebuilt Cathedral as a sign of hope, Tristram itself surged. Reclaiming its mantle as the main trading hub in the western Empire, wealth and notoriety also returned to Tristram. The Cathedral became a symbol of the "new" Tristram, but by the turn of the new millennium, it would become known for something else...

The Third and final Civil War broke out in 1002, and this time Tristram was the focal point of a massive rebel movement that nearly broke the Imperial government. The Rebel Faction drove out the few Imperial defenders in 1007 and made Tristram the capital of their movement. For the next 32 years, Tristram was besieged several times but the Rebels held the city before finally in 1039 Tristram was felled by the Imperial Legion. Its populace was brutally decimated by the fleeing Rebels, and the entire city was virtually destroyed; flames swept the city both due to the lengthy siege and the scorched earth policy the Rebels had adopted to prevent the Imperials from being able to use Tristram as a stepping stone. The Rebels even torched the Cathedral, but not before looting the once holy place bare.
It would be several years before any sort of order returned to the Tristram area. Over time, journeymen arriving from other areas of the Empire and other countries explored the ruins of the once prosperous town.

It was around this time, approximately 1050 CE, that the first rumors of supposed demonic activity began spreading around the fallen Cathedral. Observers would report a eerie red glow emanating from the shattered windows of the Cathedral, and unholy screams echoing throughout the night. Many people ventured into the Cathedral - none even returned. The perception of demonic possession of the town spread throughout the Empire, prompting the Imperial government to send a detachment to "clear out Tristram and its desecrated Cathedral". The troops sent to Tristram largely drove out the filth that languished in the town, and the presence of the Legion was enough to draw settlers back to the area, eventually culminated in the modern city of Tristram we know today. But even then, those troops did not dare enter the Cathedral, unsure of what may lurk inside.

Modern day observers claim that the Cathedral is at the very least haunted, populated by the spirits of those who were caught in the crossfires of three civil wars and massacres in the town's burning streets. Hardly anyone visits the Cathedral for any reason these days, except "ghost hunters" who swear up and down they have proof that there are spirits in the Cathedral. An explorer, name unknown, put forward evidence of a massive system of catacombs and caves deep below the planet's surface, possibly linking up with a smaller crypt entrance some four hundred yards away from the Cathedral complex. The Cathedral still looms very large over the city of Tristram today, a reminder of the sad and dark past that the city below once wrestled with and in some cases, still wrestles with today.

The Emperor Who Served Twice: Drognan III

Where: Cathedrium
When: 1002-1053 CE

The Third Civil War, also sometimes known as the Galasian Invasion, was a period where the Angirisian Empire was on the very brink of self-destruction. During this fateful period, the Imperial Throne itself was never contested and was held by the first - and thus far only - Emperor in Angirisian history to claim two separate reigns: Drognan III.

Drognan III, born in Lut Gholein and was the last of the Aranochi Emperors, ascended to the throne in the tumultuous year of 1002, a month after Emperor Arius IV was assassinated by Galasian agents disguised as Imperial Guards, and the Third Civil War began. His entire reign was devoted to stopping the Galasian Rebellion and reunify Angiris. However, his battle to save the Empire looked bleak in his first years; Imperial forces were defeated in several battles that raged across Khanduras, Westmarch, Aiuria, Angleterre and Skovos as Legion armies tried in vain to march on and liberate the Galasian-held cities of Tarsonis, Wortham, Waystruck, and Tristram, the last of which was the Galasians' capital city. The fact that Galasian forces managed to hold territory in the heart of the Empire in Angleterre was even more demoralizing for the Legion, and Drognan III struggled to convince his own armies that their cause was just. Matters were made worse when, in 1009, Drognan III's hometown of Lut Gholein was sacked by a massive Galasian force led by Arcturus, the king of what was called "New Galasia". 1013 proved to be a better year, and in the autumn of that year the Legion recaptured Tarsonis and forced Galasian armies out of Angleterre and Aiuria and forced the Galasian armies in Skovos to surrender on open terrain, but in the process lost the entire southern Empire: Aranoch, Ohiae and southern Virginium. By this point Drognan III himself took to the field, marshaling his forces in preparation for an attack on Lut Gholein but it never materialized. For the next fourteen years, the war stalled with Galasian forces on the doorsteps of Kurast in southern Kehjistan, holding Ohiae, Virginium and Aranoch and a smattering of strongholds in the western Empire including the rebel-held capital of Tristram.

After growing tired of the stalemate and finding new cause to prosecute the war, Drognan III marched to Caldeum in hopes of rallying the beleaguered Legion forces in the East. The Legions in the West took another swing at Lut Gholein in 1027, failing to retake the city but killing the Galasian King Arcturus. In the summer of 1035, faced with a two-pronged attack aimed at Kurast in Kehjistan and Westmarch City, Drognan III decided to remain in Kehjistan to fight off the attack on Kurast while the Imperial Navy and the stronger Legions in the West held the line in Westmarch City. It took less than a year, but the Eastern armies repelled the Galasians at Kurast and drove them from Kehjistan. With the Galasians sufficiently weakened in the East, Drognan III took many of his armies west to Westmarch City, where the Galasians had opened a siege against the port-city and sent armies north to reinforce Tristram. In 1036, the Legions led by Drognan III smashed the Galasian siege forces, forcing them to flee to Tristram. As he chased the Galasians to Tristram, Drognan III's armies liberated Wortham and Waystruck, and in early 1039 after zigzagging through the Arreatian Mountains for two years, laid a siege on Tristram to force the Galasians to surrender. In the fall, the Galasians would surrender, leaving behind a brutally annihilated Tristram.

It was before the victory in Tristram that Drognan III's health began to fail him. Not wishing to die before the Civil War was ended, Drognan III gave up his throne temporarily to his Chancellor, who became Emperor Hakan II. Drognan III retreated to Mar Sara, a small village known for its rejuvenating ponds in the forests of central Angleterre, in the hopes of recovering his health. While in Mar Sara, Drognan heard that the Legion had taken Tristram and was in the process of driving the Galasians completely out of Angirisian territory. Drognan would remain in Mar Sara for another four months, returning to Cathedrium in the summer of 1039. Upon Drognan's return, Hakan II abdicated and returned the Throne to Drognan, who once again became Drognan III, the Emperor of Angiris.

Drognan III returned to the battlefield, joining the Imperial Legion's forces at Candlemas, a draw between the two nations which became the single-bloodiest battle of the Third Civil War. It has been speculated that Drognan III wanted to press the Galasians and invade their homelands of Drazen and Eastmarch, but after much discussion with his commanders decided that such an invasion would be far too costly. Drognan III would parlay with the new Galasian King Aegeus, agreeing to a truce in which the Galasians would remain in possession of Drazen and Eastmarch but lost all outright territorial claims to the southern half of the Angirisian Empire. Drognan III agreed to allow open borders for three years, allowing free movement between Drazen, Eastmarch and the very southern parts of Aranoch and Ohiae.

With the Third Civil War over, Drognan III returned to Cathedrium triumphant. He would immediately set to work rebuilding the devastated parts of the Angirisian Empire, sending Legion troops, engineers and tons of money and resources to Aranoch, Ohiae, Virginium, Westmarch, Khanduras and Kehjistan in hopes of revitalizing the economies of those states. The Legion would continue to deal with border skirmishes with the Galasians for the next two hundred years, long after Drognan III was gone. But the Empire was reunified, and that would prove to be Drognan III's greatest legacy.

Drognan III would remain on the Throne until finally he passed away in 1053 after a combined reign of 41 years, beloved by his people as the "Emperor Who Saved the Nation". Modern observers call Drognan III the greatest Emperor in Angirisian history, even greater than Cain I, and place him in a unique place in Angirisian history as the only man to reign as Emperor twice. Many rulers after Drognan III often evoked his name in debates and assemblies, calling to people's sense of unity. The Kingdom of New Galasia, Drognan III's greatest enemy, views him as a villainous, yet respectable, figure in their history, while many other nations, including Mestra, Pythos and Carpathia, see Drognan III as a man who was willing to put himself on the line to save his Empire. His legacy has been immortalized many times over; most recently in the computer strategy game Empires, Drognan III was chosen to represent the Angirisian civilization over leaders such as Cain I and the recently-departed Leoric.

For all of Angiris's lengthy and bloody history, Drognan III represents one of the brightest spots in an otherwise black era.

The Barbarian Mountain

Where: Mount Arreat
When: Present Day

For centuries, historians, scholars, scientists and the public have debated the mysterious nature of Mount Arreat, the tallest peak in the Angirisian Empire and one of the very few in the entire world where there is no known record of anyone ever reaching its summit.

With an estimated height at just below 20,000 feet, Mount Arreat sits in the very heart of the western state of Arreat, and many of the state's cities, including the cities of Sescheron and Staalbreak, lie in and around the mountain's cascades and plateaus. Arreat is not known to be volcanic, but does from time to time cause some seismic activity in the region, causing many people a great deal of anxiety. Though far removed from the gigantic peaks of the Vostic mountain ranges, Mount Arreat has created an immense amount of interest because of the mystery surrounding it, and for the legends the natives of Arreat have passed down from generation to generation.

The ancient Arreatians, referred to as "Barbarians" by the Galasian Empire and later by the Angirisian League that came into territorial possession of the mountain and its denizens, believe that it is their sacred charge in life to guard Mount Arreat from outsiders and prevent it from being tainted by corrupting influences. According to some surviving written records, these so-called Barbarians called themselves the "Children of Bul-Kathos". Bul-Kathos was purported to be a major figure in the Mount Arreat region years before, possibly a king or an emperor of some kind. Regardless of who Bul-Kathos was or wasn't, he was a symbolic figure for the Arreatians and it was due to their charge that numerous groups that attempted to invade the mountain failed miserably. The Galasians attempted to conquer it during their war with the Aiurians and were driven back to the border with Aiuria. The Mahkal, en route to attacking the Aiurians to precipitate the formation of the Angirisian League, made a move on the mountain. They captured some villages on the north end of the mountain but were routed during an attack on the city of Harrogath. The Angirisian League itself failed to gain any traction over the Arreatians; only through shrewd negotiation did the Angirisian League, and later the Empire, come into political possession of Mount Arreat.

The nature of what precisely the Arreatians are guarding on Mount Arreat is shrouded in speculation, as nobody has ever managed to scale the mountain without engaging any Arreatian forces. Those who have tried have never returned. Scientists speculate that Mount Arreat may contain rich deposits of minerals and metals that the Arreatians use for their weapons and armors and postulate that the Arreatians seek to keep prospectors off the mountain to protect its pristine nature. Scholars argue that the mountain holds significant religious importance to Arreatians, as many later generations claimed their charge came from Rune himself despite the Ostrid Church in Travincal's denial of such a charge. Nobody can truly answer these sort of questions until someone brave enough travels the mountain and braves its mysterious lands... and the myriad barbarians strewn across them.
