The Wandering Adventurers
Please forgive any spelling, grammar, or basic writing errors. I'm just writing just to write as it relaxes me.

It was the two thousand and eleventh year of the fifth era (5E2011) and much had happened in the world. The unholy demon known to many as “HIM”, was destroyed and banished to and unworldly place known as the End, by a group of powerful adventurers. This story is based on that group.

Chapter 1: Rains Fall, 22nd, 5E2011

It was an mid spring morning and the hills were wet with morning dew, and the sky bright blue with few clouds in sight.
Small plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the chimneys of the many houses that dotted the country side of the village of Logar.
Birds sung their morning songs for the whole world to hear. Chickens clucked, and dogs barked. The village was awakening.

Dack lay in his bed staring at a hole in the thatching of his farm house roof.

“uhhg” Dack moaned as he sat up “I got to fix that by this afternoon” he said looking at his dog who was laying on the floor looking up at him.

In a couple of minutes Dack had food on the stove and his table fixed for breakfast, then down the road came a familiar face. It was Tom the farmer, who owned fields just next to Dack's. He was also one of Dack's closest friends and adventuring companion.

“Hello!” Dack greeted Tom as he leaned out of his door

“Good morning!” Tom yelled giving a wave as he walking by.

Dack then went back to cooking his breakfast. After finishing his food and clearing his table Dack went out his front door and stood there looking at the landscape

“It never gets old” he said as he pat his dog on the head “Well better get to fixing that hole before it rains”.

Dack was supposed to be on the roof laying down new thatching, but instead he found himself once again looking over the whole village and land surrounding it. He looked towards the village, and saw all the people working, cleaning, and going about their daily choirs and lives.
He then turned his gaze to the castle that was not far off. It was fairly large and built of a great dark stone, its towers roofs were a dark red. On the battlements he could see the soldiers keeping watch over the lands.
Then he turned his gaze again and just peering above the thick and tall tree tops of the mighty pines of the Dark Woods he could barely see the tip of the roof on the old and magical wizards tower, where his friend Merlin lived and dabbled in the magical arts.

After finally fixing the hole in his roof and finishing the rest of his chores Dack decided he would go into the village and hear the days news. It was still early in the day so it was not likely there would be much to hear until later.

Dack walked down the road and by the dairy farm where the milk maids all ran out and to the fence to watch the hero walk by.
Their blonde hair shined in the mid morning sun, and their skin shown as white and pure as the cream of the cows they milked.
“Hail my hero!” some of them said in their soft voices.

Dack glanced over at them “Hail!” he replied with a smile on his face and continued to walk by and towards the village gates.
Some of the milk maids went out and followed him down the road.

As Dack arrived at the gates, the guard looked at the milk maids then to Dack “You are one lucky man” said the guard
“It come with the job” Dack joked.

Tom walked about his fields tending to his crops and animals, when he noticed Dack walk heading towards the village. He turned to one of his senior farm hands and said “Erik, make sure the others go about their duties as planed. I'm putting you in charge for now”.

Erik nodded and went back to work.

Tom started to walk down the road when he noticed the gaggle of milk maids walking back from the village gates. “Ladies” he said.

“Oh hello!” said one of the maids

“And how are you lovely ladies doing this fine morning?” he replied

“Fine, now that you're here” said one of the more endowed maid in a seductive voice.

“Well then I must get going” he stated. As he walked by he gave a little spank to the endowed milk maid
“Ooo!” she let out then giggled with her fellow milk maids.
When he arrived at the gates the guard said “I wish I were a hero like you! Getting all the lassies in a fuss”.
Tom laughed as he walked by the guard and into the village.

Tom met Dack who was in the tavern, sitting at a corner table with two mug of tea.
“I was wondering what was taking you so long” Dack stated

“Just getting some milk” replied Tom with a chuckle.

“So any news?” he asked as he sat down.

“Nothing. Same as it is every day” answered Dack.

“Shame” said Tom taking a drink from his mug “The upside is we get free food, tea, and ale, and all the women want us in their chambers! What do we need with more adventure?” continued Tom.

“I know what you mean, but I grow bored with sitting around. Don't get me wrong I love this village, its people and the land. But I want to see forests, mountains, and dungeons again, I want that thrill of adventure!” exclaimed Dack.

Just then the sound of commotion could be heard outside the tavern in the town square. Tom and Dack went to investigate. A guardsman was standing above the crowd on some stacked crates he was a little out of breath “The...” he breathed in “The village of Hammerstone has been destroyed!!” he shouted.
Tom looked at Dack and said “Looks like you might be getting your thrill of adventure after all.”.

The crowed gathered in the square went into an uproar of screams and panic, “Calm down everyone!” yelled Tom as he and Dack walked over “Lets get this sorted out before we all panic” Tom said once on the crates standing next to the guard. Tom turned to the guard who now was taking a drink of water from a water bucket and slightly shaking.

“Lad, you say it was destroyed?” asked Dack looking up at the guard.

“Yes!” he let out “Not many survived, one of their guards reported a couple of minutes ago. I was sent to get you two and the wizard” the guard continued

“We will get the wizard” said Tom who took a leap off the crates and started towards the town gates.

“Wait for me!” called Dack who started running after him leaving the crowed to continue to wonder what was going on.

Chapter 2: The wizard of Logar

Dack caught up to Tom in the woods somewhere between the village and the tower “I bet he wont be here” said Dack.

“What makes you say that?” asked Tom.

“Well he's always out collecting ingredients for his potions. or chasing after the academy girls.” Dack said jokingly.

As they went deeper into the woods the canopy grew thicker and less light penetrated through the thick bows of the pines “This place always unnerves me” stated Dack looking around nervously like a group of goblins was going to jump out and attack them.

“Relax” said Tom who was looking up at the large trees as they walked “This place is safe during the day”.

They continued to walk until they reached a large round clearing, and in the middle was a very large and tall tower. The tower was made of ancient stone, that seemed pulsated with magical energy.
Here in the clearing no trees grew except one, a great old oak. Some say the oak was older than the tower, and even older than the word itself, but only the wizard knew that for sure.

“Well” said Dack “You first”.

Tom looked up at the tower, then at Dack “Alright, alright” Tom replied.

He took one step into the clearing, then another “See its fine” he said to Dack.

The two friends approached the towers great wooden doors, and then gave a push, the doors creaked open slowly, and the two stepped into a large room that was not well furnished, there were a couple benches and chairs, a couple of paintings on the walls, and a multitude of dead, dying or unkempt plants on many tables and desks.
The two looked around “Whats that smell” said Tom holding his nose with a disgusted look on his face.

Dack laughed as he to held his nose “Decaying plant life” he chuckled again “Lets just get upstairs and away from this smell”.
Tom and Dack ascend the large staircase and the smell of the dying plants fell faint in their noses.
The two approached another set of large doors and both gave a push, as the doors swung open the smell of must and mold hit their noses as they entered what could only be a library

“God doesn’t he keep this place clean?” said Tom.

“It's hard to keep ancient text clean I would think, they could fall apart” said Dack.

After a couple minutes of searching the many maze-like rows of bookshelves Dack found the stairs to the next level

“This way” he said to Tom who was looking through an old book in a language he could probably not understand. Tom closed the book with a loud thud and sent a cloud of dust into his face. After sneezing multiple times and Dack laughing and sneezing himself they made their way to the stairs.

The next door they found was made of a strange black metal and noises could be faintly heard from the other side. It sounded like liquids being poured and splashed, they could also hear grumbling and paper being moved around violently.

“I have a feeling he's in here” said Tom who had his ear against the door. Tom tried to lift the handle and pull the door “Locked” he stated.

“Here” said Dack who then knocked on the door. There was no answer from the other side, so he tried again. Still nothing

“That's not how you do it!” said Tom as he made a fist and pounded it against the door as hard as he could. The sound was like thunder and echoed so much the two had to cover their ears.
From the other side they could hear the sound of glass breaking and some yelling which was undecipherable. The door then swung open and on the other side stood a sheep with a wizards hat on its head.
Tom and Dack looked at each other and busted out laughing.

“Shut it!!” yelled the Sheep. “Over there on that table, give me the yellow bottle” the Sheep pointed with its hoof.

Dack walked over to the table and picked up the bottle the sheep had described, then unstopped it and held it out to the sheep.

“And how am I supposed to grab that?” The Sheep asked stomping its hoof.

Dack leaned over and put in on the floor. The Sheep walked over to the bottle, picked it up in its mouth, then tilted its head back and swallowed the potion.
It took mere seconds, and there before them where the Sheep once stood, was their friend and companion Wizard Merlin the wizard of Logar.

“Why are you here?” Merlin asked cleaning up the mess he made with a old rag.

“Apparently the village of Hammerstone was destroyed” said Dack who was looking at some potions and picked one up.

“Careful with that!” said Merlin grabbing the bottle away from him. “And yes I knew the village was destroyed”

Dack and Tom looked a little shocked “If you knew why didn't you come and tell us?” asked Tom.

“Why do you think I'm brewing these potions, just for fun? No. I knew the village was destroyed, so I started brewing these knowing you two would find out soon enough, and then come and get me” replied Merlin “I also assumed you would be in your gear so we could leave immediately”

“Well Tom decided he was going to come and get you, so I followed. I didn't want to miss out on the fun” said Dack who was laughing over the thought of Merlin being a sheep with a hat.

“Well you two go and get what you need and come back here” said Merlin.

Both Tom and Dack nodded and headed off down the stairs.

Chapter 3: Sticks and stones may break my bones...

Tom and Dack ran down the path and through the village. People stood and watched the adventurers as they ran by, they knew that they were heading off to Hammerstone to save the day.
They both ran by the gate guard, who thought to himself Maybe I should tag along but then realized how much trouble he would get in if he left his post, so he sat looking miserably at the two running down the path kicking up dust behind them.
They ran past the dairy farm where the milk maids ran to the fence to watch them run by, they called out encouraging words and promises of 'rewards' if they should return. Tom ran through his gate and into his house. Dack ran right by and continued down the road to his house.

Dack almost tripped over his dog who was laying right in the middle of his path

“Dammit!” he shouted, to which the dog replied with a bark and began to pant “No time for playing boy” he said as he hurried to a large wooden chest at the end of his bed.
He pushed the blankets and other miscellaneous objects onto the floor, and flung the chest open.
Inside were a couple of swords, a leather and chain hauberk and helmet, and a small round iron shield. He pulled out the two swords and picked the steel hand and a half sword and laid it on the bed, next he pulled out the leather and chain hauberk and placed that on the bed along with the helmet.
He ran to his wardrobe and pulled out a dark blue padded shirt and and a pair of thick leather pants, also he grabbed a large belt with a silver buckle. He fully dressed himself in all of his armor and clothes, then he grabbed two large leather bags and ran into the kitchen.
There his dog sat head tilted to one side “Not now” he said quickly stuffing the bags with breads, fruits, utensils and cookware
“I will have Lexi look after you” he yelled as he ran out the front door.

Tom was already to go except that he hadn't gotten into his armor.
Dack ran into Tom's room and threw a bag at him “Provisions” he stated as he picked up the hauberk and began to help Tom into it.
“Thanks” Tom replied “For the provisions, and helping me into this damn thing!”.

The two ran down the road, their armor was clanking along with their packs they carried on their backs. Dack stopped at the dairy farm.

“Now's not the time for flirting!” said Tom

“I'll catch up, its important” he said to Tom. Tom shook his head then started up the road towards the gate.

“Why hello” said one of the milkmaids as Dack entered the main house.

“Where's Lexi?” he asked the maid

“Oh why do you always want to see her!” said the maid in a pouting voice

“Please its important” Dack replied

“LEXI!!” yelled the maid. A maid wearing a thin white shirt and apron climbed down the ladder from the loft.

“Dack” she said as she walked up giving him a hug

“I need you to watch the dog” Dack said

“He has a name you know” she replied

“Could you watch Rufus” Dack said rolling his eyes

“Yes, yes I can” she replied.

Dack started out of the house, “Wait!” Lexi cried out and ran up and gave Dack a kiss on the cheek “Be safe” she said.
Dack then ran towards the gate.

Dack arrived at the tower to find Tom and Merlin waiting for him outside “How was she?” asked Tom

“Oh could we just go!” said Dack

“Yes now is not the time for tales of bed sheet adventures” said Merlin “Come I know of a faster way to get to Hammerstone than walking or gods forbid horses”

Merlin walked onto a large round stone pad on the ground, the pad had weird marking and runes on it. And the same magical energy that the tower gave off.

“You stand there, and you there” he said pointing out two spots on the pad that had circles of runes.

Dack and Tom stood on the spots Merlin had pointed to. “Now do not speak” said Merlin

“Is this going to hurt?” asked Dack

“No speaking!” Merlin said in a stern voice.

The three stood on the pad for what seemed like forever, then Merlin started to speak in a very old language and the runes and markings started to glow with a gold and purple light, ancient runic symbols began to appear in the air around them, and then suddenly everything went a bright and blinding white.
After a little bit Dack, Tom, and Merlin found their sight and looked around

“We are here” stated Merlin who looked please with himself.

“Where is here?” asked Tom who was puzzled on what just happened.

“Just two miles outside of Hammerstone, and just a couple hundred feet from the village of Hammerbridge” Merlin said motioning behind him.

“I always wondered what this thing was as a kid... What is this?” asked Dack.

Merlin laughed a little “Its called a Teletext stone, and they are very rare. One must know the right words for the stone he is on and the one he is traveling to, or very bad things could happen to the caster and any travelers .”

Tom looked around “Well lets go see someone in charge I guess” he said walking off the large stone pad they all stood on.

Chapter 4: Fire! Fire! Fire!

As the trio entered the village, they saw what must be refugees from Hammerstone sitting around and walking around the village. They had soot and dirt on them, and some were hurt or had blood stains on their clothes. Dack stopped and tried to talk to a couple of them, but they either didn't want to talk or continued to walk by without even acknowledging him. Tom and Merlin tried to talk to them as well, but got the same response.

“Strange, very strange” mumbled Merlin.

They quickly located a large official house with a couple of weary looking guards near the center of the village.

“This must be the right place” said Tom who was knocking on the door.

An older man answered the door “Who are you?” said the man who looked a little confused at the sight of clean travelers and not more refugees.

“I am Tom, and this is Dack and Merlin” Tom said motioning towards the others.

“What do you want. Can't you see Hammerstone was attacked and I have enough to deal with?” said the man who looked tired and worn.

“Yes we know, sir, that's why we are here! We are Adventurers and heard of what happened.” Tom replied.

The man gawked “Adventurers. BAH! Who needs you! If we didn't have people like you in this world, this kinda thing wouldn't happen.” the man said his face turning red.

“But sir we are...” Tom was interrupted by the man slamming the wooden door in his face “Well that was interesting” Tom said turning to his companions.

“Well lets go see whats happening in Hammerstone these days” suggested Dack who was eager to get into some action. Just as they were walking up the road towards Hammerstone the man opened the door of the house and ran towards the adventurers “Please wait!” he cried “I was upset and tired and my... my daughter. She was in Hammerstone when the attack happened, please forgive my rudeness and help me.. us. Please!”.

Dack looked at the others, then to the man “Sir, we shall help find your daughter, but we need some information”

“Anything” replied the man.

“What attacked the city, and when?” asked Dack.

“What, I do not know. But when, that I do know. It happened sometime during the night, I remember hearing explosions and seeing fire and the smell of smoke come from the city, and the screams, oh the screams.” replied the man.

Dack looked at his companions with a slightly worried look, then in the direction of the city which large plumes of smoke could be seen rising above the trees.

“And your daughter, what is her name and where would she have been?” Dack asked.

“Her name is Samantha” said the man “She worked at the inn sometime, she would be there. And before you ask, The inn is near north wall”.

Dack put a hand on the man's shoulder “Don't worry” he said “We will try our best, and ask no reward”. Then Dack turned to his companions “Lets go” he said and started to run up the road towards the smoke.

As the adventurers got closer to Hammerstone the smell of burning wood grew stronger, and the smoke thicker. Off in the fields they could see people lying dead, but none of the dead were of that of which attacked the city, just commoners and farmers. As they grew closer to the gates they noticed still no bodies of the attackers.

“Strange” said Dack in a worrying tone.

“Maybe they slipped in and caused this fire, then let their army in under the cover of the smoke and chaos” said Tom.

“Maybe” replied Dack “Just something seems wrong here”.

The trio entered the city, and not a soul was in sight. Tom went into a couple house that were still standing and found nothing of interest inside, just bodies.
The group worked their way to the north wall searching any standing buildings, and keeping their eye out for the inn the man had told them about.

“It's to quiet, I don't like this at all” said Merlin who was wrapped up in his robes with his hat flopping about as he walked.

“Relax, I don't thing what or whoever attacked the city is still here. I don't think they would just let people walk in” said Tom.

“He is right though, it is quiet” Dack said worryingly.

The group came to a stop and listened. All that they could hear was the sound of fire crackling and the creaking of burnt out buildings “See nothing” said Tom

“If you say so, but keep your wits about you” replied Merlin.

The group then started walking again. They arrived at what they thought to be the inn, but was merely a big pile of rubble. A large half burnt sign hanging by one chain read The Crown and Sword Inn.

“Well then, if that mans daughter was here, she is most defiantly not among the living.” said Merlin.

Dack climbed up the rubble searching for some sign of life, but he found none “Damn” he said to himself.
Just as he was climbing off the pile he noticed something

“Whats this?” he said moving some rubble out of the way. “Help me with this” he called to Tom.

Tom ran over and helped him move the rubble.

“Its a trapdoor” said Tom looking at it.

Dack tried to pull the door open with no luck “Damn” he said. Then just for the hell of it he tried knocking to see if anyone was inside

“Hello?” he asked while knocking “It's safe now, the attack is over”.

Dack could hear some movement from the other side “H...h..hello, w..who is that?” came a female voice from the other side

“Samantha is that you?” Dack shouted through the door.

“No, but she is down here” came the voice.

“Well then let us in, her father sent us to retrieve her” said Dack.

The sound of a lock unlocking was heard then the door opened slowly, and then a dirty face of a young women appeared

“Please come” she said quickly.

Dack and his friends walked down the stairs into a wine cellar.

“My name is Abby” said the girl as she lead them through the cellar.

“I'm Dack, and these are my companions Tom and Merlin” he said.

Abby brought them into a small room where Samantha lay on a bedroll, there were others in the room as well.

“Is she alright?” asked Dack.

“No, she was struck on the head by a drunkard just hours before the attack, so we brought her down here to rest away from any men who would try to take advantage of her” replied Abby.

“She's very lucky, she might have not survived the attack” said Merlin “How long has she been out?” he asked.

“Well she's been in and out, and we've given her water and a little spirits to help ease the pain” replied Abby.

“Here let me take a look at her” said Merlin who knelt down beside Samantha.

“He's a wizard, he should be able to fix her right up” said Tom.

Merlin lay his hand on Samantha's forehead and within a minute or two she was awake and had no pain. “Who are you?” she asked looking around a little bewildered.

“We are adventurers!” Dack, Merlin, and Tom said at the same time “And your father sent us to come and get you, he is very worried” said Dack

“My father?” said Samantha who looked confused.

“Oh no she's lost her memory!” exclaimed Tom “Good going, what was that spell anyways?!” Tom continued to yell at Merlin. Then two went on arguing about potions and the wizards schooling.

Samantha stood up and loudly stated “I have not lost my memory!”

The two stopped arguing and looked at her. “If you have not lost your memory, then why don't you remember your father?” asked Dack stepping between Tom and Merlin

“Because he died five years ago” replied Samantha “You must be talking about that old fool in the village. He's not my real father, that man is my uncle and took me in when my father died” She took seat on the stool in the room.

“Samantha...” Dack started saying “Don't call me that, my name is Sam” Sam interrupted.

“Ok. Sam. Your uncle asked us to find you and return you to him” Dack started but was interrupted again

“I don't want to go back to him, and that boring life. You said you were adventurers right?” she asked.

Dack, Merlin and Tom looked at each other, they had heard this line uttered before, usually by very young men from the local villages, but never from a girl.

“Yes we are adventurers” replied Dack already knowing what she was going to ask

“I wish to accompany you!” she started

“Wait a second, Why would we take you, a girl, with us?” Tom asked

“I have skills that could be useful, plus I wish to leave this horrid place and never have to go back to my boring life and uncle again” she said in reply

“What type of skills would you have?” asked Dack looking her over

“I'm pretty good and gaining things that don't belong to me” she said

“A thief!” exclaimed Merlin

“Now hold on friend” said Dack “How do we know you can do what you say?” he asked Sam.

“Well for starters I believe these are yours” she said handing over three small pouches to Dack

“Our money?” Tom said confused.

“I think that speaks for itself” said Dack laughing while checking to see if anything else was missing. “Well then get whatever you can find to bring with you, I need to talk with your friend” Dack said.

Sam went out of the wine cellar to look for some goods and supplies among the rubble, Merlin went with her to make sure his spell held up. Tom and Dack turned to Abby who was standing in the corner “Now could you tell us what attacked the city?”

Merlin walked down the road trailing a bit behind Sam “You don't intend to steal anything else from us do you?” he asked her inquisitively

“What!? No, I just did that to show you that I had a set of skills that could be useful to you” she replied as she rummaged through some broken wardrobes

“And just what do you hope to gain from accompanying us?” he asked picking up a leather pack from a broken chest

“To get away from here and see the world” she flashed a smile “Down here” she said to Merlin. “It's the smithy”

“Or was the smithy” Merlin said to himself following the girl.

Sam climbed into the half collapsed building and started going through the chests and crates “Do you remember anything about the attack?” asked Merlin

“No” replied Sam trying on a helmet that was too big “Well I do remember hearing screams and crashing, and I dreamed that I was in a fire” she said

“Most likely because of the smoke and heat” stated Merlin picking up one of the less damaged swords “Here” he said handing it to her

“Thanks” she said as she put it on he belt. “I think I have everything I need” stated Sam

“Then lets head back” said Merlin

“This way!” said Sam running down the street.

“So let me get this straight” said Dack “You're telling me a dragon came from the skies and set the city on fire”

Abby nodded “I didn't see it, but others were screaming it” she said

“And were there any troops or monsters attacking the city?” asked Tom

“Yes” she replied “I saw a couple of men in black armor enter the inn just as I locked the trapdoor”.

“Anything else?” asked Dack

“Yes, James my husband, he's over there. He came running in a couple minutes before yelling about undead or something like that” Abby said pointing to a heavyset man sitting on the floor next to a barrel.

“James?” said Dack crouching next to him

“That's my name don't wear it out” he replied laughing and coughing

“Abby said you saw some 'undead' is that true?” Dack asked

“Yes, I saw them with me own two eyes!” he exclaimed “I was running down a road near the temple, and as I was going by the graveyard I saw a couple men in black robes, and I could hear them chanting something over the sounds of the explosions and screaming. I don't know what language it was, but then some of the dead started to stand up and walk!”

Dack looked at Tom then to James “Then?” he asked

“They started to run after people, so I got the hell outta there” replied James taking a big gulp from a rum bottle “Calms me nerves” he said holding the bottle out to Dack

“Uh no thanks” Dack said.

Just then Merlin and Sam walked back into the room “Find everything?” Dack asked looking to Sam

“Yes” she replied.

Dack told Merlin everything that Abby and James had said. Tom was talking with Sam.

“So do you know how to use that?” asked to motioning towards the sword on Sam's belt

“Yes I do” she replied

“Oh and where did you learn?” asked Tom

“From my father, my real one, before he died” she replied.

“How old are you anyways?” Asked Tom.

“You sure asked a lot of questions, anyways it's not polite to ask a woman's age” she said

“You hardly look like a women” Tom said then received a smack over the head with a bit of broken barrel, followed by Sam storming off over to Dack and Merlin.

“I meant you look to young to be a women yet!” he shouted.

The group accompanied by Sam said thank you and goodbye to Abby and James, and then set out onto the streets.

“Black armor?” asked Merlin

“Yes Merlin, black armor. And undead” replied Dack

“We must go North to the Mythic Tower, I must speak with my masters” Merlin stated

“Why?” asked Dack and Tom

“Who cares lets just go!” said Sam who seemed excited about the trip

Tom and Dack ignored her. “I think I know who is behind this” Merlin said “But I need to speak with my masters before we go any further in this adventure”

“Then we go north!” said Sam who was starting towards the north gate, her bag flopping back and forth on her back as she ran.

Chapter 5: The great wilds

For the group to make their journey to the Mythic tower they would need to head north through the Calamar woods, and into the village of Crotas Rest and then the City of Tor's Hold. From there they would have to brave the Endless Plains, which is known for its large bandit and Ork population.

Dack walked ahead of his companions, he scouted for any trouble or anything of interest. Merlin was just behind the group making sure nobody was sneaking up on them, also he gathered useful plant life to sell and use for potions and salves. Tom was walking with Sam, and Sam was trying not to talk with Tom as she was still upset about his earlier remark. Tom was trying to get her to talk by pointing out interesting things or telling her stories about his adventures, but nothing seemed to work.

“I found a place to camp” said Dack trotting towards Tom and Sam “There is a small clearing just off the path a little ways, and it's near a stream” he pointed just ahead.

Once there Sam walked over to a stump at the edge of the clearing near the stream and sat herself down, laying her pack against it. She removed her helmet and fixed her rose colored hair, which was now matted down from sweat and the helmets padding. She also removed her gloves and lay them next to her on the stump.
Dack and the other were busy gathering firewood and water. Dack was gathering water from the little clear stream, when he happened to look up an lock eyes with Sam, who was watching him. Her eyes were as blue as the most deep ocean, and as beautiful as the Logar countryside after a warm springtime rain.
Dack walked over to her and placed a waterskin next to her pack and smiled.

“Has anyone told you how beautiful your eyes are?” he asked.

Sam smiled back “No” she blushed a bright red.

“Well they are” he said as he walked off to gather some more water.

She walked over to Dack, and knelt next to him. Dack looked up and saw Sam biting her lip looking at him, and before he could say anything she was on top of him, her lips touched his. They both stayed kissing each other for a couple more seconds, until Sam slid of Dack and sat next to him.

“That was the first time I ever kissed a man” she said blushing

Merlin and Tom walked into the clearing to find Sam sitting next to Dack both of them looking at the running stream as the setting sun glimmered off the water.

“Hope we're not intruding on anything” said Merlin.

Sam's face turned red and she quickly got up and ran off into the woods saying something about finding firewood, not noticing Merlin and Tom were holding two large piles of wood in their arms.

“What was that all about?” asked Tom

“Oh nothing really” replied Dack

“But you two were just..” Tom was interrupted

“Could we just focus on making camp, and not the fantasies running through your head” Dack said walking over to his pack.

Night came with clear skies and warm air. The fire slowly dying and the companions in their bedrolls around it. They all quickly fell asleep.

The morning came with sounds of birds chirping and the faint smell of fire still lingering in the air. Dack sat up and stretched his arms and looked around, he noticed someone was missing. He realized who it was. It was Sam. Dack looked around, and noticed some brush cleared, forming a path heading up stream. Dack threw on his boots and followed the newly made path, until he found a large pool with a small waterfall. At first he saw no one, but then out of the water popped Sam's head, but she did not see Dack. Dack noticed that her clothes were laying on a log near the bank of the pool, he laughed to himself a little. He dare not intrude on her privacy, but he too needed to wash and figured 'why not?'. He walked over to the pool and sat on the log. Sam was washing herself near the water fall, then once she turned around to head towards the bank, she saw Dack

“Oh!” she cried out. “You scared me, you should really warm people before you sneak up on them” she said swimming closer to the bank

“Could you throw me my clothes?” she asked.

Dack looked her then to the clothes “Come get them” he said with a grin on his face. She looked at the clothes then at him. She stayed in the water for a couple minutes more, still looking back and forth between her clothes and Dack. Then she made her decision and walked right out of the pool, her body totally exposed.

Merlin was the next to awaken, he walked over to Tom and gave him a nudge with his foot “Get up!” Merlin said in a grumpy voice. Tom did not move so Merlin kicked him.

“I'm up, I'm up!” said Tom who sat up quickly and looked around “Where's Dack and Sam?” he asked Merlin.

Merlin looked around “I haven't a clue” he replied.

Just then Dack and Sam walked out of the wood together “Good morning” said Merlin to the two inquisitively.

“Yes it is!” replied Sam leaving Dack's side and walking over to her bedroll.

Dack walked over to his bedroll as well and began to pack it up. After a quick breakfast of some provisions the companions packed up their camp and retrieved some water from the stream for their waterskins, and then set off heading north again.

The companions had traveled for a couple of hours, and it was about noontime and they were all hungry. Dack who was still at the head of the group could smell a campfire or maybe a chimney of a woodland cottage. Upon further inspection Dack saw what appeared to be a small stone cottage, with a couple of tents and awnings surrounding it. Dack quickly ran back to his companions who were waiting on the road.

“Well?” asked Merlin.

“It seems to be someones home, maybe a farmer or hunter” replied Dack.

“Maybe they will let us partake in a meal?” said Tom who's stomach was making sounds.

“Lets find out” Said Sam heading in the direction of the small cottage.

The companions arrived on the property of the cottage and looked about, it seemed no one was around. Tom knocked on the door, but nobody answered it. Merlin inspected the tents and awnings, he found some samples of clay, rock, dirt, coal, iron, silver, gold, and all sorts of gems and other earthy materials.

“Looks like this cottage belongs to a scholar of sorts” said Merlin.

One thing caught his eye, a large wooden box with glass windows. Merlin walked over and inspected this box closely, and found it contained a strange black rock in the shape of a cylinder.

“What could this be?” asked Dack coming up behind Merlin

“I have no idea” said Tom joining them.

Just then some voices could be heard.

“Quickly, everybody out of the tents, and into the open” instructed Merlin.

Two men entered the cottage property, and stopped at the sight of the adventurers.

“May..May we help you?” asked a redheaded man wearing a dirty unbuttoned grey shirt and brown trousers.

“I believe so” said Merlin stepping forwards “I am Merlin wizard of Logar, and these are my companions, Dack, Tom, and Sam” he said Merlin motioning towards his friends “We are here to ask...” Merlin was interrupted by the redheaded man

“Are you a wizard of the Order? Because if you are I'm sorry..”

Merlin then interrupted the man “I'm sorry, what order?” he asked.

“The Mythic Order of course!” stated the redheaded mans companion in a dull voice with his hand on his dagger.

This man stood much taller than any of the others, and wore green hooded robes with a golden trim.

“No I am not” replied Merlin

“Oh thank the gods” said the redhead man sounding relieved “Please come and sit, you all must be famished. Hunter go fetch the bread and cheese” the redheaded man motioned towards the cottage “And some wine!”.

The companions and the man sat at a table under one of the awnings. “My name is Doctor Roger Wimbolt Watson, R.W. For short” said Watson as Hunter returned with the bread, cheese, and a rather large bottle of wine.

“It's a pleasure to met you Doctor Watson” said Merlin shaking the mans hand. “What is it you do?” Merlin gesturing towards the tents filled with all of the samples.

Watson seemed a bit excited by this question “I'm an anthropologist, archaeologist, and scientist my good sir!” he blurted out and then taking a sip of the wine.

“And that thing in that box, what is it?” Merlin asked.

“That is what I call a 'Core Sample'” Watson stated “It comes from the deepest places in the earth, and has magical properties” he finished with a quick nod.

“What sort of 'magical' properties does it have?” asked Merlin who poured himself a glass of wine.

“No one knows” Watson said leaning back in his chair and putting his hands behind his head “They don't all seem to share the same ones”.

Merlin looked very interested “When were these discovered?” he asked

“Oh about a year ago by yours truly” replied Watson who looked pleased with himself.

Both Tom and Dack were eyeing the rather tall robed Hunter while they ate, Sam noticed them both staring and gave a quick whack to Tom's head

“Stop staring, it's not polite” She said slurping her wine.

“Ah yes, I forgot to introduce my.. umm.... my friend” said Watson motioning at Hunter “This is Hunter, he is a mage like yourself Merlin, but a young one. He was tasked with helping me recover a core sample and return it to the Mythic Order, so he could enter their ranks and they could study it”.

“That one there?” asked Dack who motioned towards the tent.

Watson looked a little upset “No that one is mine. The one we are trying to get we can't get to” he grumbled “The damn thing is guarded by some ancient spirit warriors” Watson gestured towards the large hill off in the distance.

“Could we be of any help?” asked Merlin who almost looked excited.

Watson looked over the four companions for minute, then after finishing up a piece of bread he cleared his throat “Yes I believe you may be of some help” he said as he stood up “Please once you are ready come talk to me” he said.

The companions talked it over and agreed that they should help the doctor, mainly because it was the right thing to do, and they had already eaten his food, and also because Merlin would not take 'no' for an answer. Merlin walked over to Watson who was gathering some papers together in his cottage.

“Ah, have you made a decision yes?” asked Watson

“Yes, we have agreed to help you” replied Merlin

“Then follow me” said Watson heading out the front door.

They group arrived at the foot of the large hill. The companions could see the entrance to the cave the doctor and his friend dug. All six of them ventured in. They stopped in front of a large wooden door not 50 feet into the cave

“I'm afraid I can be of no further use, as I am not skilled in the blade or the arcane arts” said Watson “But Hunter will accompany you. Wont you?”.

Hunter looked angrily at the doctor “Yes I will go with them” he said in a sharp tone.

Then Hunter opened the door and the five stepped through and entered a dark entrance chamber, they brought out torches, Merlin and Hunter summoned small spheres of blueish white light.
As they walked around the chamber Dack, Tom, and Sam examined the strange pictures and markings on the wall.

“What do you think they mean?” asked Sam

“No idea” replied Dack

“Probably some ancient race of cave elf” said Tom.

Merlin who was following Hunter then realized that the others were not with them and ran back to get them.

“What are you doing!?” Merlin asked in an angry tone

“Sorry” said Sam who ran after Merlin, Tom and Dack followed leaving the entrance chamber and strange paintings behind them.

Chapter 6: The darkest of dark

They walked in the dark wet cave for what seemed like hours, only seeing what was in their torchlight. The further they went the less fresh they air got.
They reached another chamber here Hunter stopped them

“The air here is dead, and you would die a horrible death if you ventured any further. I can get use through this as I have many times before gotten the doctor through” said Hunter.

Hunter stood with his armed raised to each side and chanted some strange arcane words. Suddenly a gust of cold air was about them, and the air in the chamber was alive again. They quickly moved through and into the next chamber.
The next chamber had a small river running through it, with small stepping stones sticking out of the cold rushing water

“Where are the boards?” Hunter said to himself seeming irritated.

“Boards?” asked Tom

“I built a bridge so me and the doctor could get across” replied Hunter

“What about these stones” said Sam crouching near the rivers edge

“Careful!” exclaimed Hunter “Do not touch the water, as it is enchanted and will freeze any part of you that may touch it”.

The companions stood there arguing about how to get across, when it was finally decided that they were going to have to use the stepping stones.
Dack volunteered to go first. He jumped to the first stone, then the next and the next until he was across

“It's fine” he yelled to the others “Easy stuff”.

The next to go was Merlin, who had not trouble at all. After him was Sam, then Tom who slipped and almost fell but caught himself, then Hunter was last.

“Now the next chamber we enter is a little ways ahead” said Hunter “That is where the Core Sample is located, along with the spirit warriors”.

Dack drew his sword “How many are there?” he asked Hunter

“Four I believe” he replied.

Tom and Sam also readied their weapons. The five slowly entered the last chamber, It was a large and tall chamber that was lit with strange magical torches that seemed to glow a light blue color.
Dack pointed ahead at the back of the room, and there on a pedestal was the core sample. Just then two spectral beings entered the room from a doorway next to the pedestal, and readied their weapons. They were spirit warriors, the companions had dealt with them in the past. One of the spirits had a long thin sword and the other carried a large mace. The two slowly walked towards the companions

“Tom and I on the left, Sam and Merlin on the right, and hunter provide support and possibly our escape” said Dack.

They stuck to the plan and started their attack on the warriors.
Great blows were exchanged from both the living and the spirits, but the companions quickly dispatched the two spirits back to their eternal rest.
Then two more quickly entered the room, this time they appeared to be heavily armored and carried large swords. The battle went on for a good while, both human and spirit inflicting damage to each other, but in the end it was our hero's that won.
Tired and hurting Dack made his way to the pedestal to retrieve the core sample, but was ambushed by a huge spirit, and was sent flying across the room by its large flail.
Dack hit the wall with a thud and lay limp. Sam wanted to help but Tom ordered her to help fight the spirit. This spirit warrior stood what seemed like 8 feet tall and looked as if he was all muscle when he was alive. He let out an eerie laugh that was mixed with a spectral moan “You die here silly mortals” the hulking spirit spoke in a raspy hiss of a voice.
Sam and Tom charged the large spirit, but were very much out matched, and ended up fleeing back towards the door they entered, dragging Dack's seemingly lifeless body with them. Merlin was casting all the spells he knew but it seemed to do nothing to the spirit

“It just doesn't give up” he yelled.

Hunter who was covering Sam and Tom with lightning spells quickly used a telekinesis spell to pull Merlin towards the others before the large flail head hit the ground and breaking the floor where he once stood.
Merlin recovering from the spell Hunter used on him, rushed to tended to Dack and the others while Hunter walked into the room to meet the spirit. He stood looking at the large spirit.

“Puny mortal human” hissed the spirit who raised his flail to attack.

“I am no human” replied Hunter removing his hood to reveal his pointed elvish ears. The spirit warrior became uneasy and wildly swung at Hunter, who quickly dodged the specters attacks. Hunter cast a spell that put a spectral bow into his hands and aimed it at the specter, and released two arrows aimed directly towards the spirit's heart.
The arrows landed on their target and the large spirit warrior wobbled around and then fell to the floor and vanished. He quickly grabbed the core sample and walked over to the others.

“Is he alive?” asked Hunter.

Merlin was busy preforming a spell, then once finished he answered “Yes, very much so”.

The five exited the cave to find it to be late afternoon and the sun setting. Merlin and Sam carried Dack between themselves, with Tom in the front leading them out and Hunter following close behind. They arrived at Doctor Watson's cottage to find the place ravaged and the small cottage destroyed. Hunter ran to the rubble

“Doctor?!” he screamed out, but there was no answer.

“We must make camp for the night” said Merlin “So I can attend to his wounds” he gestured at Dack.

“The core sample!” Hunter said running over to the tent that used to house all the samples “It has been take!” he exclaimed “The Council wont be to happy about this”.

The next morning Dack awoke with a splitting headache and Sam fast asleep her head resting on his chest. Merlin walked into the little camp they set up next to the ruined cottage.

“She hasn't left your side all night” he said to Dack. Merlin walked over an crouched down “Here” he said handing him some water and herbs “It will stop the pain and any internal bleeding”

Dack quickly swallowed the horrible tasting herbs “Yuck! Why do these things taste so horrid?” he asked.

Merlin laughed “Who cares about the taste, it's what it does that counts”.

“So if it tasted like cow dung but made you immune to death for the day you would eat it?” asked Dack

“Everyday” replied Merlin.

Dack laughed causing him to cough which ended up waking Sam

“You're awake!” she said hugging him

“Careful now” said Merlin “Wouldn't want to damage anything”.

After their breakfast Merlin turned to Hunter “Now what do we do with that core sample?” he asked pointing his pipe towards the bag on hunters waist

“I must bring it to the Mythic Council, and inform them the other was taken and the doctor missing”.

Merlin nodded as he puffed on his after breakfast pipe

“You are free to travel with us” Dack said holding his ribs “It's.. uhg.. better to travel with friends than to travel alone”.

Hunter looked over the group “So you are my new friends?” he asked dryly

“I don't see why not” said Tom who was putting out the fire with his feet.

They quickly broke camp and began their journey north towards the village of Crotas Rest. Along their way not much happened, Tom hunted a little and killed two rabbits, which were quickly skinned and gutted. Their pelts would be sold in the village and the meat would be kept for their dinner. Soon they could see the village and it was not but a mile away. The companions had no trouble gaining entrance to the village as it had no walls or gates, but had plenty of guards patrolling the roads and paths.
They settled for a cozy looking inn called “The Drunk Bard” which was a local hot spot for gossip and known for its large selection of ales.
